Normally, as I say, I should not give this procedure a second thought, but this morning I received the following letter: (Apparently, it's fine for the Prince of Wales to accept bundles of bank notes from Arab potentates in Fortnum and Mason carrier bags, but if my daughter wants a house in Leeds with a bathtub and a spare bedroom, everything has to be printed out in triplicate to prove we're not linchpins in some international criminal enterprise).Īnyway, she's temporarily printerless so I've been doing the necessary, and noted the characters on the documents becoming just a little pale and decided to treat the P1006 to the fresh cartridge that had been sitting on my shelf for goodness knows how long and order replacements. One of my daughters is buying a house, which has involved moving some money around, and for some reason the legal profession requires hard copies of every pertinent document, something to do with money laundering regulations I believe. Recently, though, I have been doing an inordinate amount of printing. I cannot remember having a paper jam, the toner cartridges seem to last forever, and when I do need replacements I buy them in packs of two and get on with my life. To my eternal shame, I rarely give the benefits of the P1006 a second thought. Since I have no longer had Auntie's skirts to cling to for protection from inkjet horror, the HP Laser Jet P1006 has been doing a fine job, with the bonus that it's unlikely to get rid of me because it's looking for someone younger/older/slimmer/fatter/less male/more diverse or, possibly, just a little less heavy on printer paper. But at the same time, they also funded Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, BBC Breakfast, and the career of Claudia Winkelman so, you know, swings and roundabouts. So now may be the time to afford yourselves a glow of pride in the knowledge that your licence fees in some way funded what I laughingly call my literary career.

In fact, I wrote two books while at the BBC, and in the interests of full disclosure, and in preparation for making peace with my maker when the inevitable reckoning arrives, I must confess I may have printed out a chapter or two on the office printers, or - I did say full disclosure - to be scrupulously accurate, a book or two.
The thought of taking the cartridge out of the machine and shaking it about to liberate the last little bit of ink, the memory of the occasional blots on the paper, those things make me shudder quite frankly.įortunately, for much of that dark period I had a proper job working for the BBC and - prepare to be shocked - whenever I could I would use the printer at work, and sometimes for jobs not directly connected with the business of the Corporation (I also used to take paper clips home occasionally).
I look back on my inkjet days with disdain. To fully appreciate the following you need to know that my printer is an HP Laser Jet P1006, which I have had for, I don't know, ten, maybe twelve years now, and I am very happy with it.
